Progressive Voices - Homeless Shelters



Mark Alston Follansbee is the Executive Director of Somerville Homeless Coalition www.somervillehomelesscoalition.org which operates an Adult Shelter, Family Shelter, Project Soup (a Food Pantry program), the Passages program (providing individualized case management services to homeless and at-risk households, and several “Housing First” programs providing some of the most at-risk homeless individuals Affordable Housing with home-based Supportive Services.


In the interview Mark talks about the challenges of addressing homelessness, the opportunities presented by the "Housing First" model, and the threats posed to his organization's continued work by today's economy, and, in particular, by the pending Massachusetts Ballot Question #1, which would eliminate the State Income Tax.
